Improvisation

Today was quite extraordinary. It was today that I was to lead the Creative Beginnings Improvisation session in the Chandler Studio. I was overwhelmed by everyone pulling together to help me set up all the kit in the morning. I had the Venue Technicians (all 3 of them, all grumpy, but at least they were there), the 2nd Year Production Electricians, Ray from DFTV, Malky the AV Stores Dude and Sarah Leask. Everything went really smoothly and the venue was more or less ready by mid morning.

The idea behind this session was to let the 1st Years (all of them from the School of Drama) play and explore performance without being tethered by a Director or Designer. The groups were mixed up, we had a good mixture of DFTV, TPA and Acting students. The Studio was split into compartments and labelled as Props/Costume, AV, Lighting, Live Sound, Documentation, Recorded Sound, Voice, Performance and a Green Room. Each group improvised a short performance and fired in cues from the different departments. The performers reacted to whatever was thrown at them.
