It’s started.
I’ve been waiting a year to get going, sitting in the office listening to the others have their own Eureka moments emerge from deep pits of academic struggle. Now it’s my turn, well, mine and Ros’s. Matriculation first, which was a simple and swift affair with non of the ceremony that the ‘regular’ freshers were subjected to. There were 6 of us in total, four from the School of Music and myself and Ros were the sole Drama representatives. Andrew Comrie is the Programme Leader and will be responsible in facilitating our learning. I know Andrew from years ago, when I was a DSM at Perth Rep in the early 90′s. At the time I had no idea what he did for a living but I always remember him being friendly and highly sociable after a few drinks. I didn’t recognise him when he walked into the room 12 months ago (this is my second attempt at the PG-Cert, having pulled out last year due to illness), but for some reason he remembered me. I do remember it being a bit of a relief that I actually new the teacher. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw soon after and never got a chance to speak to him properly. I do now….
As Andrew began his welcoming introduction I tried to remember back to the last time I sat through this intro, the mood was very different in the room then. The atmosphere was thick and muggy with resentment and confusion due to the job cut announcements and a general feeling of pointlessness. The task ahead was as unclear as our futures. It was a difficult time. This time however, the mood was much lighter. Andrew seemed energised and up for it and it wasn’t long before the ice was well and truly broken, if not significantly cracked.
