I have been reflecting on the micro-teaching assignment for most of today and was desperate to get back to WordPress to record my thoughts. I have decided to go with my initial plan instead of the myriad that have somewhat distracted me over the last week. I needed a sound foundation on which to begin this planning process and as with every module I have written in the past it had to begin with a learning outcome. I realise that this assignment isn’t for an entire module, but for one fraction of a lesson, however it still had to be underpinned with a direct goal. So I have written one, if not for anyone else but for my own planning.
As it stands the learning outcome is as follows:
Learning Outcome 1: To introduce the concept of blocking and blocking notation as used in the production rehearsal process. At the conclusion of this session the student should be able to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the basic techniques used in notating blocking and why this process underpins the rehearsal process.
Using this as a starting point I have begun to build a framework for the class. The delivery is to be blended, using technology and practical (live) elements. I have listed the components below that I think will make the class both dynamic and address several different learning styles, ensuring the class is completely inclusive. The components are:
- A simple brief outlining the learning outcome, aims and delivery method.
- An introductory podcast available on Moodle and on 4 iPod Touch devices as supplementary material.
- A keynote animation to introduce blocking notation.
- A live blocking session, using two members of the class, which is repeated using the remaining students.
- A Q&A session
- An evaluative debriefing on the session itself.
- A further podcast, again on the iPod Touch units and Moodle with further practice blocking animations.
- An online Critical Incident Form on Moodle, to be filled in after the session.
To aid reflection I am also considering setting up and making available a collaborative WordPress blog for the students to reflect on the session at a later time. I’m not sure if this is necessary, but I think covering every aspect of learning should be made available as part of the exercise, even if it’s not used.
The brief should be clearly laid out with good quality images and follow guidelines set out by the DDA.
This outline still needs further planning and implimentation, the process will be recorded here as it occurs.
